Artwork

What are metallic effects?

"Metallic effects are achieved by printing inks directly onto a silver substrate. For any areas of the design that are not metallic, white ink is first printed onto the substrate, followed by the process-colored inks on top. The white ink blocks the metallic sheen of the substrate and provides a white background or base.

Do you have artwork setup guides?

Yes we do. The quickest way to slow down turnaround time on your custom packaging order is to submit artwork to us that doesn’t meet our press-ready requirements. Before submitting every artwork file, ensure you’ve covered the following bases, and you’ll be setting your project up for smooth sailing.

We put together guides to give you a quick overview on how to meet our press-ready requirements. Additional information and instructions can be found below.

What do "safe zones" mean and why do you mention them?

The safe zone is the green box centered in each panel of our artwork templates. We recommend keeping all important text and graphics within these green lines to prevent them from being trimmed, folded, or misaligned.

Can you explain the artwork file fee?

Artwork Versions refer to the number of artwork (SKU) files that make up your order. You can split one order into multiple designs, with each design being a separate artwork file. Your first artwork file is free, and each additional file incurs a $15 fee. This isn’t a proofing or setup fee; it takes additional time and effort for our Pre-Press team to route multiple files for production.

What is artwork color matching?

Getting the correct color setup for your artwork is crucial. If you require color matching, please provide the specific details when uploading your artwork.

This could include:

  • Color matching a physical sample you send us.

  • Matching colors to other artwork we've produced for you in the past.

The more detail you provide, the better we can assist with your color match request.

What is CMYK?

CMYK is a color profile for design files that are destined for print. The letters stand for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black – the four colors of ink used in our printing process. RGB is another common color profile, but it's meant for screen presentation (e.g. websites), not physical dyes. Because our presses print using CMYK inks, all elements of the design, including any linked images, must be in CMYK (Process) mode prior to sending your artwork. Please note that converting from RGB to CMYK can cause significant color shifts. We recommend taking the time to carefully review and make any necessary color corrections before sending us your files.

What is rich black?

When using a black background or large black areas in your artwork, it’s important to ensure this black is set to 100% K (Black) and does NOT contain any Cyan, Magenta, or Yellow color values (a.k.a. 4-color Rich Black). Using a black swatch with these values will cause visible quality issues where the heat is applied to seal the packaging—like burning and delamination. Additionally, please avoid using the Registration color swatch in your artwork, as it is a rich black made with 100% of all four CMYK colors and results in heavy ink coverage.

What is the minimum resolution?

We require a minimum of 300dpi in submitted artwork, especially if your design includes any photographs or raster images. Anything less than that can appear blurry and pixelated. Don’t think that more is better, though – anything higher than 300dpi isn’t necessary, and will likely only mean a larger file size that takes longer to upload to our system. 300dpi is a safe “set it and forget it” for artwork success.

How do I convert text to outlines?

When creating your design, you’ll likely add typography using a text tool that relies on the font libraries installed on your computer. Since we can’t guarantee we have the same fonts, we ask that all text be converted to outlines. Outlining text removes the font information and converts the editable letters into fixed, uneditable objects, ensuring your text prints exactly as intended. We recommend doing this as a final step, once you’re satisfied with how your text looks. Pro tip: Outline the fonts in your final exported PDF to preserve the live text in your original source file, in case you need to go back and make changes.

Do I need to include bleed?

Bleed is the area outside of the trim line that will get cut off. While it ultimately gets removed, it plays a critical role in the final presentation of your product. Designing for bleed makes sure your design, whether photo, graphic, or solid color, reaches all the way to the edge of your bag when it’s trimmed, avoiding unintended white edges.

A minimum of .0625” (1/16”) of bleed is required. We require you use our templates for your artwork, as they already include the required amount of bleed.

Do your files use CMYK color mode, with no RGB or SPOT color information?

"When creating artwork files, you’ll choose between different color profiles for your design. RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is used for screen display, such as websites, while CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) is typically used for physical printed materials, like the bags and pouches produced on our presses.

It’s important to set up your artwork in CMYK format from the start of your design process to ensure that what you see on screen closely matches what will appear in print. Files created in RGB mode can result in unwanted color shifts and disappointing print results, as many bright colors seen on screen cannot be accurately reproduced in print.

Spot colors are a separate color set used in printing in addition to CMYK, but our presses are not capable of printing spot colors. Therefore, we cannot guarantee spot color accuracy with our CMYK printing process."

Do I need to include trim or crop marks?

Trim/Crop marks are hairline horizontal and vertical lines printed with your artwork that define where the page should be trimmed. Registration marks are small “targets” outside the page area used in some printing processes to align the different ink separations in a color document. Neither of these marks are necessary for, or used in, our workflow. Please do not include them in your press-ready files.

What design program do you recommend? Why can't I use Canva?

Canva isn't one of our supported design programs, but we highly recommend Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Photoshop can definitely deliver press-ready artwork as well!

Why does my digital proof look different than my physical proof?

Your digital proof will never look exactly like your physical proof. For starters, your computer screen is backlit using an RGB (red, green, blue) color display. As a digital printer, we print using CMYK ink (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), which results in a marginally different color combination. The finish applied on top of your artwork will also impact its final appearance — something that can’t be accurately reflected in a digital proof.

What's the difference between new artwork and replacement artwork?

New artwork means we haven't seen, digitally proofed, physically proofed, or produced the artwork file yet. Replacement artwork means that we’ve printed something similar in the past and you just have an updated or revised copy for us.

How many colors can I use in my artwork file?

Thanks to our digital printing process, you're not charged for how many colors you include in your artwork file. We print using CMYK ink (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black), which allows us to standardize our price per unit, regardless of factors like ink coverage.

Can you recommend a good graphic designer?

Products

What are quality tolerances?

To put it simply, printing hundreds or even thousands of items means that some won’t quite make the cut in terms of quality – or things could go better than expected, and some of your run’s “buffer” prints pass QA with flying colors. Though we aim to match your requested quantity, you may receive slightly more or less than this target number.

Your bill will reflect the actual quantity of your print run, so when reviewing your quote, please take into account the price range and be prepared when your order is produced. Note that tin cans, paper tubes, stickers, and labels are always produced in the exact quantity ordered.

To be clear, tolerances are just for our fully custom products. If your packaging journey takes your through our Roastar Design Lab instead, forget you ever heard about tolerances. If you order 25 gusset bags, you’ll get that exact number—no complexities there!

What are your quantity tolerances?

We have quantity tolerances that vary depending on the product. Due to the nature of our manufacturing process, we must account for both shortages and overages when producing flexible packaging.

Why Do Quantity Tolerances Exist?

Bags and pouches are initially printed on a roll, with extra material added for setup and alignment. The amount of material required for setup varies with each run. If we fall short within the tolerance range, reproducing a small amount to meet the exact quantity would require excessive material, time, and waste.

If the setup goes smoothly and we produce more than expected, rather than sending the excess to a landfill, we include it in your order—supporting sustainability.

How Tolerances Apply to Your Order

Tolerances are based on quantity per design or SKU. For example, ordering 1,000 gusset bags with one design means your tolerance is ±5%. However, ordering 1,000 gusset bags with 5 different SKUs (200 per design) means a ±50-bag tolerance per SKU.

Since we may produce slightly more or less than your ordered quantity, a remaining balance may be due (if we produce more), or a refund may be issued (if we produce less). This balance is automatically applied to your original payment method within 5 business days of shipping.

Can you fill my bags if I send you my product?

Although we're experts in all things packaging, filling the containers we make is a bit outside of our scope. Customers, including the manufacturers or co-packers they work with, are responsible for that step.

Do you offer spot varnish effects?

Unfortunately, we don't offer a spot varnish service. When we make bags, we start with blank materials that get digitally printed with your artwork. After printing, we apply an overlaminate—or finish—across the entire surface. We can't isolate parts of a package for spot gloss effects; our bags are either fully gloss or matte.

Does my bag need a degassing valve?

Let’s talk science — gather ‘round, coffee snobs. Gases (including a bunch of carbon dioxide) are emitted after roasting and continue to emit even after your coffee is packaged. If the gases are trapped inside the package, this can cause the bag or pouch to inflate or bloat (not cute).

Here’s where the degassing valve magic comes in. When pressure inside a sealed package increases beyond the valve opening pressure, a membrane in the valve momentarily opens to allow gas to escape out of the package. As gas is released — and the pressure inside the package drops below the valve close pressure — the membrane reseals. This one-way air valve is added to fresh roast and ground coffee bags to allow the carbon dioxide to easily escape and prevent more oxygen from entering, slowing the rate of reaction and increasing the lifespan of your lovely coffee. Mm, coffee.

Read more about degassing valves on our blog.

Can I put a window on compostable packaging?

Unfortunately not. For a clear window to be possible, the base material of the entire bag needs to be clear polymer. We print white ink on areas of the bag that have a design, then print your artwork over that white ink layer. Window areas receive no ink at all. Our compostable material has a base layer of paper face stock, which isn't transparent— making our whole window process a non-starter.

If you are looking for a sustainable material with a clear window option, check out our clear recyclable material.

What packaging material is best for my product?

Check out our Material Guide for the materials we offer, including sustainable options. If you have any questions, we're happy to help. Get in touch.

What type of printing does Roastar do?

We’re a digital printer of custom-printed bags, pouches, and roll stock for many industries. Digital means no plates are used, so there are no plate fees or setup charges. We can produce your order quickly, with lower minimums than traditional print processes.

Can I order samples?

Yes! You can order a sample pack of our products. If you have a specific product in mind and don't need the entire sample pack, please specify using the note box at checkout when ordering samples. We'll do our best to accommodate your request!

Sustainability

How can I label my sustainable product for disposal?

We believe that using clear language and giving proper direction for disposal on your packaging (such as by including disposal logo) helps it avoids the landfill and enter the appropriate recovery stream. We suggest all brands familiarize themselves with the Federal Trade Commission Green Guides and the following updates to guide the language printed on their bag.

We’re proud members of How2Recycle, a third-party organization that standardizes recycling labels. Brand owners that want to use the How2Recycle label must be How2Recycle members. However, we recognize that not everyone can afford the membership fee. That’s why we created our own set of disposal logos, giving all our customers access to clear, credible labeling.

These disposal logos, tailored to our materials and available in a variety of styles, can be downloaded and added to your design. The store drop-off recyclable and industrially compostable logos include QR codes linking to facilities that can process those materials.

Still have questions? No sweat—we're happy to help! Contact your customer service representative, and they will connect you with our sustainability team.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is a term used when businesses falsely promote their products as being more environmentally beneficial than they truly are. Using broad or vague language and unsubstantiated claims can mislead customers into thinking they are purchasing a product that supports sustainable efforts when it does not.

Some examples include claiming a product is made of 100% recycled material when it is only partially made of recycled material, or using large amounts of green in a natural-looking design along with terms like "eco-friendly," without any substantiated claims or collection process.

Avoid greenwashing by correctly labeling your product.

Is your recyclable material certified?

Our recyclable bag material and features (valve and zipper) have been approved by our recycling partner and store drop-off collector, Trex.

The recyclable material and zipper are also How2Recycle compliant; our valve is pending approval. Customers that want to use the How2Recycle store drop-off recyclable logo on their product must be How2Recycle members.

Though we support the idea of more cohesive and global labeling conventions (such as How2Recycle), we recognize that not everyone can afford to be a member. Therefore, we offer free disposal logos for our recyclable materials at no cost to our customers.

What is the shelf life of Roastar's sustainable packaging materials?

There are many storage condition factors (temperature, sun exposure, moisture, etc.) that affect the lifespan of any product. For this reason, Roastar cannot guarantee the seal property or overall quality of these products past the length of time listed below:

• Recyclable Material: 12 months

• Tin Can: 12 months

• Paper Tubes: 12 months

• Compostable: 6 months

Are Roastar sustainable products food safe?

Yes! All of our products are FDA compliant.

Are your compostable bags backyard compostable?

No, our compostable bags are not meant for home composting. Our White Kraft Compostable bags have been tested and meet the ASTM D6868 standard. This standard outlines specifications for bioplastic products—plastics made from renewable resources designed to biodegrade into natural elements—intended for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial facilities.

Our Brown Kraft Compostable bags contain three structural layers, two of which currently meet the ASTM D6868 standard. The third layer is undergoing testing.

Although standards are being developed, there are currently no ASTM standards in place for home compostable products in the U.S.

Is your compostable material certified?

Our White Kraft Compostable bags have been tested and meet the ASTM D6868 standard. This standard outlines specifications for bioplastic products—plastics made from renewable resources designed to biodegrade into natural elements—intended for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial facilities.

Our Brown Kraft Compostable bags contain three structural layers, two of which currently meet the ASTM D6868 standard. The third layer is undergoing testing.

For more information on the testing process and the innovative degradable technology behind this product, read our blog on Roastar’s ASTM-Compliant Products.

Do you offer a recyclable valve and zipper?

Yes! We offer recyclable valves and zippers for each of our recyclable stand up pouches, flat pouches, and flat bottom bags.

Do you offer a compostable valve and zipper?

Yes! We do offer a ASTM6868 compliant compostable valve for each of our bag styles. Compostable zippers are available in select sizes of our stand up pouches and flat pouches.

Why can't I design over the entire compostable bag?

Since our compostable products use a paper-based material, there are some restrictions on where artwork can be placed on the template. Ink cannot be applied in heat seal areas, as burning, sticking, smudging, and tearing could occur.

See our artwork setup guide and template for more information.

Do you offer compostable labels for my blank or custom-printed bag?

Yes! We offer custom-printed white compostable bag labels. Learn more.

Can a compostable material do more harm than good?

Yes. When industrially compostable bags are sold to consumers without access to proper collection services, they are most likely to end up in a landfill. In a landfill, compostable materials are no longer in their ideal environment for breakdown and may release gases in amounts equal to or greater than those of our standard bag material.

Before selecting a compostable material for your bag, research the accessibility of commercial compost locations in the region you'll be selling your product. To help ensure proper disposal, download our free disposal logo with a QR code linking to these locations.

Businesses in regions such as Washington, Oregon, California, and Colorado that have better access to composting facilities could consider compostable products.

Which sustainable material is best for me?

Great question! Here are a few things to consider:

• Your budget

• Your business goals (do you plan to sell locally, nationally, or globally?)

• The accessibility you and your customers will have to the proper collection process for the product in mind.

• Consumer behavior

Compostable Bags

In the U.S., there are currently about 5,000 commercial compost locations in total. Only a percentage of those sites collect commercially compostable, bio-plastic products. Businesses located near, or selling to, those regions (areas of Washington, Oregon, California, and Colorado) will have better accessibility to those programs and could consider compostable products.

Store Drop-off Recyclable Bags

Businesses with locations in, or selling to, broader areas of the U.S. may want to consider a more accessible option, like our store drop-off recyclable bags. These bags can be returned at many locations across the country, including places consumers already frequent, like their local Kohl’s or grocery store. Contact us for a full list of Trex-specific collection sites.

Tin Cans

Our tin cans are curbside recyclable and infinitely reusable when paired with our valved peel & stick ends, making a refill program possible.
