Questions we get about our Gusset Bag
What is a gusset bag?
The beauty of a gusseted bag is it expands as you fill it, giving you space and flexibility to play with in your packaging design. You’ll typically see gusseted bags filled with whole bean or ground coffee, but these bags also work well with tea, snacks, candy, pet treats, and more. Bonus points? Gusset bags provide great shelf stability — once filled, they stand upright with no additional support.
What is the minimum quantity I can order?
We are happy to report that the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for our four custom-printed, standard gusset bag sizes is 500. This minimum can also be broken down into increments of 100 per artwork file or design.
Or consider personalizing one of our patterned gusset bags in our Roastar Design Lab™ with a low minimum order quantity of 25.
What is a degassing valve?
Let’s talk science — gather ‘round, coffee snobs. Gases (including a bunch of carbon dioxide) are emitted after roasting and continue to emit even after your coffee is packaged. If the gases are trapped inside the package, this can cause the bag or pouch to inflate or bloat (not cute). When pressure inside a sealed package increases beyond the valve opening pressure, a membrane in the valve momentarily opens to allow gas to escape out of the package. As gas is released — and the pressure inside the package drops below the valve close pressure — the membrane reseals. This one-way air valve is added to fresh roast and ground coffee bags to allow the carbon dioxide to easily escape and prevent more oxygen from entering, slowing the rate of reaction and increasing the lifespan of your lovely coffee, and protecting the bag's seams from bursting. Mm, coffee.
Read more about degassing valves on our blog.
What size do I need for my product?
The capacity of bag sizes we provide are approximations only. The capacity (ex. 1 oz, 2 oz) is based on tests using whole coffee beans. A bag's capacity will vary depending on the product - and for coffee, the type of bean and style of roasting impacts fill volume. For example, salt vs. tea; salt weighs more than most teas. We highly suggest ordering our sample pack to trial fill your product to determine the right size for your needs.
How do I start designing my coffee packaging?
We're a designer-friendly company that values the importance of both design and designers when it comes to making your bag sing. If you've never designed for packaging, our best recommendation is to contact a designer for help with your artwork. We can't overstate the value of an experienced designer when it comes to submitting an art file that will 1.) get approved and 2.) look AWESOME. In need of a designer? Check out our Designer Directory. We have a large list of designers, ready to help you swag your bag!
What is the purpose of a tin tie?
Tin ties are flexible bag closures that are placed near the top of the gusset bags and allow the end user to open & close the bags when needed. The bag can be rolled down and tin ties bend around the bag to secure it from reopening, keeping product fresh. We offer black and white tin tie color options.
How do I fold a gusset bag?
When folding a gusset bag, make sure to fold or roll the material back with the tin tie under the material, not over it. This helps ensure the tin tie stays secure and gives the bag a clean, crisp finish. For a tutorial on the correct way to fold the gusset bag, view this video.
