Bleed
The outer graphical edge of your file that extends beyond the trim is what is referred to as the document bleed. To prevent any unwanted white borders on the finished bag, Roastar recommends extending all graphic design elements .125” beyond the dimensional trim size of each bag panel.
Trim
Trim lines indicate the finished size for each panel of your bag. Once printed the bag panels will be cut as close to the trim line as possible, but because of the mechanical tolerances involved in printing, the actual cut can vary slightly between the bleed and the safe margin (area within the trim line outer bleed). This is why it is important to keep your text and images aligned within the safe margin.
Software & Template Setup Tips
- When to create your document at the full bleed size
If you are working in a vector/illustration program (Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw) or a raster/photo editing program (Such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Photo-Paint), we recommend that you create your document at the full bleed size. Creating the document at full bleed size will prevent any white edges from showing at the borders after the final product is trimmed. - When to create your document at the trim size
If you are working in a layout program (QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign) we recommend that you create your document at the trim size and include the specified amount of bleed for your product (.125”). When exporting the finished file as a Press Ready .PDF be sure to include bleed in your output settings.
Image Resolution
Resolution in print terms refers to the number of dots per inch (dpi), or the amount of detail that an image has. Most documents prepared for upload should be 300 dpi at 100% of the final print size (See bag dimensions). Keep in mind that higher image quality can mean larger finished file and longer upload times.
Color Profile – CMYK or RGB
Roastar is a process color printer.CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) are the colors Roastar uses in our printing process, vs. RGB (Red, Green and Blue) the colors used by screen displays such as your monitor.
To ensure that what you are seeing on screen closely matches what is produced on our printing presses, we recommend that your files be created in CMYK color mode.
Creating files in RGB color mode may produce unwanted color shift, as many bright values seen on screen cannot be reproduced in print.
Converting Fonts to Outlines (Illustrator Users)
Often time designers or brand owners include unique non-standard fonts in the design of their bags. Roastar recommends that all fonts be converted to outlines to avoid font substitutions and unwanted text-related changes. Follow these simple steps to create outlines from all text in your design files in Adobe Illustrator:
- Select all text.
- Click Type Menu> Type> Create Outlines
- Text now has a blue outline.
- Save a copy and re-upload.
